Match Preview for Bayern Munich v St Pauli
It has been a dreadful international break for Bayern Munich with two of their key players – Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano – sustaining serious injuries.
Davies’ is the more concerning, his ruptured ACL suffered in Canada’s game with the United States meaning he will likely miss the start of next season and is fighting to play again in 2025. It is yet another blow for the injury-plagued left-back whose agent was unimpressed with Canada’s decision to play him in the CONCACAF Nations League third-placed play-off.
Nedal Huoseh said: “I am very disappointed. Alphonso was not 100 percent after the Mexico game and it was planned that he was not going to start against the USA.
“On Saturday night, the expectation was he would not be in the XI. As a captain, I feel he was pressured to start the game by the coach.
“Alphonso is not the kind of guy to say no in those moments. He ended up playing and look what happened.
“Canada Soccer needs to do a better job managing these players, in my opinion. Alphonso is down and obviously really disappointed about this injury.”
Canada Soccer responded to Huoseh’s comments, calling them “untrue.”

If that wasn’t bad enough, Upamecano returned from France duty with floating fragments in a knee.
He was initially expected to miss around six weeks but German newspaper Bild reported this morning he too has had to have an operation and is facing three months on the sidelines. That would mean he would miss the rest of the season with the FIFA Club World Cup in June his target date.
The injuries couldn’t have come at a worse time with Bayern attempting to regain the Bundesliga crown they lost to Bayer Leverkusen last season – they hold a six-point lead over Xabi Alonso’s side at the top of the table – and with a Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan looming.
Bochum are 15th in the table but Bayern will be wary given they lost their last home game to lowly Bochum. That was Bayern’s first league defeat since December and it would be a major surprise if St Pauli can inflict more damage on the table-toppers.
St Pauli have won just one of their last seven games, but that did come in their last outing, a 1-0 defeat of Hoffenheim.
