Match preview

Freiburg are finally back to winning ways over the past week ahead of the visit of Stuttgart to the Stade Europa-Park in the Bundesliga where neither side have really been that convincing since German football returned.

There were moments before the World Cup where it felt as if Freiburg would find themselves creeping into the title race. They sat just three points behind Bayern Munich before the finals and were in third too.

Now, however, they come into this game with a six-point gap on the league leaders and way down in sixth as well. At the same time, their goals difference is now a solid zero with 30 goals scored and conceded.

In midweek, Freiburg edged past 2. Bundesliga’s Sandhausen with two late goals. Philipp Lienhart scored in the 87th minute before Nils Petersen bagged in the 95th minute to secure passage through to the quarter-finals.

Stuttgart played in the DFB-Pokal two weeks back and narrowly beat Paderborn on the road in a 2-1 win. Outside of that win, however, Bruno Labbadia’s men have lost two and drawn two in the Bundesliga. Their only draws have come against Hoffenheim and Mainz.
