Can Bayern Munich retain the DFL-Supercup, or will RB Leipzig need to reopen their brand-new trophy cabinet?

Last season, Bayern claimed their tenth consecutive Bundesliga title; no team had won more than three successive titles before this streak.

However, having crashed out of the Champions League to Villarreal in the quarter-finals in April, European glory is the focus for Julian Nagelsmann’s team, even more than usual.

Will Germany’s dominant club kick off the new campaign by lifting yet more silverware?

In stark contrast, RB Leipzig are very much the new kids on the block, hoisting aloft a major trophy for the first time back in May.

Just 70 days ago, Die Roten Bullen beat Freiburg on penalties in the DFB-Pokal Final at Olympiastadion.

This is their first ever major honour, having previously lost in the 2019 and 2021 Pokal finals.

Domenico Tedesco, who only took over last December, also guided Leipzig to fourth in the Bundesliga and the Europa League semi-finals.

So, could RB Leipzig be the side who, eventually, end Bayern’s strangle hold over the Bundesliga title?

Well, this will be a good early indicator with both looking to lift the DFL-Supercup at Red Bull Arena.

Star man Christopher Nkunku was expected to leave Leipzig this summer but signed a new long-term contract a fortnight ago.

Meanwhile, Tyler Adams, Brian Brobbey and Nordi Mukiele have all the left the club, the latter doing so just this week.

Xaver Schlager is the only notable arrival, coming in from Wolfsburg for €12.5 million.

There’s been a lot more change at Bayern Munich, not least with Robert Lewandowski departing for Barcelona.

The Polish striker scored 344 goals in 375 appearances for Bayern, but will not become the Bundesliga’s record scorer, remaining 53 behind Gerd Müller’s record.

To replace Lewandowski, Bayern have recruited Sadio Mané who will make his debut for the Bavarian giants here.

As will Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch, who’ve both coming in from Ajax, as well as Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutch defender cost a whopping €67 million as a replacement for Niklas Süle.

Here, it’ll be intersting to see what Julian Nagelsmann believes his best centre-back duo to be.

Will Dayot Upamecano start against his former side, or will it be Benjamin Pavard or Lucas Hernandez who get the nod?
