Union Berlin will be eyeing up a spot at the top of the Bundesliga this weekend when they meet with Mainz in the top flight with the Berlin outfit now to within just two points of Bayern Munich up in first.
It’s been easily Union’s best season since coming into the Bundesliga, as they now sit second in the league and into the quater-finals of the DFB-Pokal after a victory over Werder Bremen in the cup.
Robin Knoche scored that day, as Kevin Behrens sealed a comeback win for Union. However, Niko Grieselmann was sent off in the final few minutes of the game that day. Urs Fischer has also guided his side to a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen in the league and a 2-0 win in the Berlin derby against Hertha Berlin in the German capital.
As for Mainz, they were thrashed 4-0 by Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the DFB-Pokal round of 16, as the champions of Germany ran riot at the MEWA Arena. Prior to this, the club smashed VfL Bochum 5-2 in their biggest win of the season.
Mainz still sit 11th, however, as a result of a loss to Borussia Dortmund two weeks back.
