Bayern Munich vs Celtic match preview

Celtic must become the first team since April 2021 to win at Bayern Munich in the Champions League if they are to have a chance of progressing to the round of 16 and recording a famous comeback when they visit Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

The Scottish Premiership leaders held their own in the first leg of their play-off last Wednesday, falling behind to Michael Olise’s 45th-minute opener before Harry Kane added a second four minutes after half-time.

Daizen Maeda make the Hoops’ task mildly less onerous with a 79th-minute reply in their 2-1 defeat, although the Bundesliga table-toppers remain huge favourites to go through.

Bayern retained their eight-point domestic lead over reigning champions Leverkusen with a 0-0 draw at the second-placed side on Saturday.

“Whether it was the stuff of champions or not… we’re still out in front and can also progress on Tuesday,” Roten attacker Thomas Muller said after the draw. “We’re not bothered about more than that.”

Celtic remain 13 points clear of Rangers after a 3-0 home win over fourth-placed Dundee United on Saturday. “The mentality of this team has been relentless all season… the performance level was really good,” manager Brendan Rodgers said afterwards.

“We’ll get back in, recover and prepare for a really exciting game for us on Tuesday, and we go in with a good feeling.”

Bayern vs Celtic team news

Wideman Alphonso Davies is absent for Bayern because of a hamstring injury, while goalkeeper Daniel Peretz is still suffering with a kidney contusion the 24-year-old sustained in training almost a month ago.

Wingers Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane must avoid bookings to ensure they are not suspended for a potential tie against Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid, depending on the outcome of the draw on February 21 to finalise the round of 16 fixtures.

Midfielder Paulo Bernardo has an ankle issue and winger James Forrest has a foot problem for Celtic, who have lost on nine of the previous 10 occasions when they have been beaten in the first home leg of a European tie.

Alistair Johnston will miss out in the round of 16 first leg, should the Canada right-back be cautioned and Celtic progress.

Brendan Rodgers CelticBayern vs Celtic prediction

Anything other than Bayern progressing would be a major shock, given that the six-time European champions have been almost perfect at home since March 2024.

Their only home defeat during that period came against Leverkusen in this season’s German Cup, when Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off after 17 minutes.

The stats either make unhappy reading or alleviate the pressure on Celtic, depending on how optimistic Rodgers’ disposition is.Joshua Kimmich playing football for Bayern Munich

Bayern are unbeaten in their last 14 European encounters with Scottish teams, have won four and drawn one of their previous five matches against Celtic and have won their last five matches and four ties against Scottish teams.

Celtic can make history by winning a knockout-stage tie in the Champions League for the first time, but their task is a formidable one against opponents who have won seven in a row at home in all competitions, scoring at least three goals in each.

Harry Kane has scored five times in Bayern’s last three home games. Even if the England striker does not do so again, expect his team to win 2-0.
