Match preview

After 1,736 days, or just under five years to be less precise, Champions League nights at back at Celtic Park.

Last season, having recaptured the Scottish Premiership title, the Hoops secured automatic Champions League qualification.

This was a massive relief, given that they’d fallen in qualifying in each of the last four seasons, dumped out by AEK Athens, Cluj, Ferencváros and Midtjylland.

The Celts have only finished in the top two once in their last five attempts in this tournament, doing so in 2012, thanks largely to a famous victory over Barcelona.

Right now though, Ange Postecoglou could not be coming into this huge clash in better form.

On Saturday, they demolished Rangers 4-0 at Parkhead; Liel Abada bagging a first half brace, Jota scoring an impudent dink and David Turnbull pouncing on a goalkeeping howler.

This though will be a completely different ball game, with Real Madrid visiting Glasgow’s East End for the first time since a European Cup quarter-final in 1980.

Last season, los Blancos won La Liga, the Champions League and another trophy for just the third time, only previously achieving this treble in 1957 and 2017.

The reigning European Champions have never failed to reach the knockout phase, with this their 27th group phase, but were beaten at home by FC Sheriff 12 months ago, so shocks are possible.

This time round, Carlo Ancelotti’s team have already claimed the UEFA Super Cup and have won four out of four in La Liga, winning a top-of-the-table clash of their own on Saturday against Real Betis.

Both have 100% records this season, so will it be a famous night at Paradise, or are Real Madrid set to spoil any potential party?
