Chelsea head into their game with Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League knowing that passage into the knockout stages is secured after Kai Havertz’s stunning goal stole all three points away to RB Salzburg in Austria last week.
As for Zagreb, they are merely fighting for a place in the Europa League in this one, as they cannot move ahead of AC Milan in the table due to their inferior head-to-head record with the Serie A champions. At the same time, their goals difference is at -6, meaning there would have been very little hope in progression regardless. In fact, the Croatian side’s only win came in a victory against Chelsea back on the opening day in the Champions League.
That game also saw the end of Thomas Tuchel at the Chelsea helm, and he was replaced by Graham Potter. Potter only just felt his first loss as Blues boss, which ironically, came at the hands of his former employers, Brighton & Hove Albion. The west London club were smashed 4-1 by the Seagulls, as they went 3-0 down in the first half from two own goals. Havertz got the club back into the game, but Chelsea were at their worst under Potter so far and three points never looked likely.
In the Champions League, however, that loss to Zagreb in Croatia remains the only chink in their armour, as Potter guided his side to wins over AC Milan home and away, before securing qualification with a 2-1 win over Salzburg last week.
