Match preview

The Graham Potter era at Chelsea finally gets under way on Wednesday night, eight days on from the sacking of Thomas Tuchel after an opening round defeat to Dynamo Zagreb.

Due to the postponement of the weekend Premier League fixtures, Potter has had a bit of extra time to get to know his new players ahead of a crammed schedule and it will be intriguing to see what immediate changes he can make to an underperforming squad that has already lost to Leeds and Southampton in the league, as well as the opening Champions League defeat.

It leaves the game as a must-win and very little breathing room for Potter, who must make the immediate jump of punching above his weight with Brighton to expecting to win every single game now with the Blues.

The new Chelsea boss has admitted he has never even been to a Champions League game, let alone take charge of one, and he is without at least two key players ahead of the visit of RB Salzburg.

Edouard Mendy and N’Golo Kante are both missing through injury, and one of the key problems to solve will be what to do without the latter, with Tuchel struggling to replace him in the early stages of the season.

There will also be a desire to see Chelsea’s attackers unleashed in the game. While Raheem Sterling has settled in quickly at Stamford Bridge, the likes of Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic have been well off the pace so far this season and will be hoping that a change in approach will pay dividends.

Having started their own Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to AC Milan last week, Matthias Jaissle’s side are becoming a side who are difficult to beat, but are short on options with a number of injuries.

Maximilian Wober, Oumar Solet, Kamil Piatkowski, Bryan Okoh, Mamady Diambou, Ousmane Diakite, Samson Tijani, Luka Sucic, Justin Omoregie and Sekou Koita are among those injured and unavailable.
