Match Preview

Chelsea will head on the road in their first Champions League game of the season with the Blues heading to Croatia where the champions of 1.HNL, Dinamo Zagreb, will play hosts to the 2020 champions of Europe in the first game of the new campaign.

Although this is far from an easy away trip for Chelsea given the start to the season for Zagreb, the Blues are still favourites to win on the opening night. Back in the Premier League, however, they are sitting sixth and have lost twice already and registered a draw with their high-flying rivals, Tottenham Hotspur. Elsewhere, the Blues also lost to Southampton and Leeds United, conceding five goals and scoring only one of their own.

A lot of attention will now fall on the shoulders of Raheem Sterling in his first Champions League outing with the London club. The Englishman has so far netted 23 times in the competition, which is the same figure as Chelsea’s greatest-ever marksman, Frank Lampard, and one less than two-time Champions League winner, Paul Scholes – only Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney have scored more in the Champions League (30) as Englishmen.

As for Zagreb, they once again sit top of the table in the 1.HNL having won seven of the eight games so far and lost the other one. It means they are the only unbeaten side left in Croatia’s top flight, having scored a stunning 27 goals already and let in just 10.
