Winless Marseille host top-of-the-table Sporting CP at the Stade Velodrome already looking down the barrel of a miserable Champions League campaign, at odds with their domestic league form which sees them still unbeaten in Ligue 1.
However defeats to Tottenham and a shocking 1-0 reversal at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in Gameweek 2 has left them without a point in Group D and already six points off their opponents, with this clash set to mark the half-way point of the Champions League group stage.
Since that defeat three weeks ago, Igor Tudor’s side have responded with a point at home to Rennes and a 3-0 win away at Angers to ensure they remain in form domestically, but a European record of 16 defeats from the last 17 Champions League games – and a failure to score in 11 of those – means they head into the game already on the back foot and in desperate need of something to turn that around.
They must do so without Sead Kolasinac, but Chancel Mbemba (suspension) and Leonardo Balerdi hope to feature.
For Sporting, their triumph over Tottenham in the dying stages of their GW2 clash put them in pole position to secure qualification to the knockout stages of the competition, at odds with their form last season when they started poorly but still managed to scramble through in second place.
Despite the records of both sides in Europe, Marseille have enough about them to overcome a rocky start to the campaign and end their European hoodoo.
