Match preview

After a comfortable victory in the reverse fixture at Anfield, will this one go the same way?

Eight nights ago, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s superb free-kick and then Mo Salah’s impudent penalty saw Liverpool easily beat Rangers 2-0 on Merseyside,

This means Jürgen Klopp’s side are on six points, having just about beaten Ajax at home and been hammered 4-1 in Naples the previous week.

So, another victory here would leave the Reds in a strong position to reach the knockout stages.

Having said that, Liverpool actually find themselves tenth in the Premier League right night.

On Sunday, despite equalisers from Darwin Núñez and Roberto Firmino, they were beaten 3-2 in North London by league-leaders Arsenal.

So, perhaps some hope for Rangers who, despite reaching last season’s Europa League Final, have struggled with the step-up in difficulty level.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team have lost all three Group A matches, conceding nine and scoring absolutely zilch.

Their remaining two home games, this one and then Ajax on matchday six, are their best chances of climbing off the bottom.

In the Scottish Premiership, the Gers have enjoyed back-to-back 4-0 wins, hammering St Mirren on Saturday.

However, this is almost literally a completely different ball-game, with Liverpool set to be too strong as they visit Ibrox for the very first time.

Rangers team news

Giovanni van Bronckhorst deployed a 5-4-1 at Anfield last midweek, but will surely be more adventurous here.

James Sands is set to return at centre-back, having served his one-match ban; John Souttar and Filip Helander are still sidelined.

Alfredo Morelos led the line in the reverse fixture but, having scored twice more on Saturday, Antonio Čolak will be hoping to get the nod this time.

Glen Kamara and Ryan Jack may return in midfield.

Liverpool team news

Luis Díaz hobbled off at Arsenal on Sunday, so is a major doubt for this game.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold was hooked at half time, with Joe Gomez replacing him.

Jürgen Klopp has ditched the tried-and-trusted 4-3-3 in the last week, opting to go with a flexible 4-2-4.

So, Fabinho may remain on the bench, with Thiago and Jordan Henderson the midfield duo.

Boyhood Celtic fan Andy Robertson is injured, so will miss out on a trip to Ibrox.
