Match preview

Birmingham City are set to act as hosts this weekend, as Reading prepare to make the trip to St. Andrew’s for a Championship showdown on Friday, December 16th.

The Blues will head into proceedings no doubt desperate for a return to winning ways.

This comes with John Eustace’s troops in the midst of an underwhelming stretch of form, spanning either side of the World Cup break.

Heading into the halt in proceedings in England’s 2nd tier, Birmingham had notched just one win in four, slipping to a home defeat at the hands of Sunderland in their final fixture of November.

When all was said and done at Bloomfield Road, though, Eustace and co. were forced to settle for a share of the spoils, owing to a drab stalemate featuring just a solitary shot on target.

Birmingham, as a result, have slipped back down to 14th in the table, now just six points clear of the bottom three.

Safe to say, then, that Friday’s hosts will have their work cut out for them in clinching a return to the win column in the Championship.

This comes with their upcoming opponents having bounced back from their own shaky stretch in impressive fashion of late.

Reading, once in the thick of the thick of the fight for an automatic promotion spot, slipped alarmingly off the pace from early October, leading into November.

A run of just one win from nine saw them plummet to mid-table in the Championship, with some having gone as far as to suggest that the Royals could be sucked into the relegation dogfight.

A 2-1 victory over Hull City heading into the international break could therefore not have come at a better time.

And this was since followed by a 2nd win on the trot in the club’s return to action last weekend.

A meeting with a Coventry City outfit riding high on the back of a quartet of successive three-point hauls ultimately gave rise to a 1-0 Reading triumph, secured by Amadou Salif Mbengue just inside the hour mark at the Madejski.

It is the visitors, then, who will enter proceedings on Friday looking the favourites based on form.

We at 101, though, are backing Birmingham to ultimately do enough to emerge with a share of the spoils, come the full-time whistle at St. Andrew’s.
