Match preview

A Sunderland outfit eyeing a return to winning ways will act as hosts on Monday, December 26th, in a Championship showdown with high-flying Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats, of course, emerged from the recent World Cup break in scintillating form, putting Millwall to the sword by three goals to nil to build hope of a potential surge up the table in England’s 2nd tier.

The two weeks since, however, have seen Tony Mowbray’s troops fail to kick on.

First, a late collapse saw Sunderland put to the sword by two goals to one at the hands of West Bromwich Albion.

Sunderland, as a result, have slipped back into the bottom half, as we move into the 2nd half of the Championship season.

The upcoming visitors to the Stadium of Light, in turn, will no doubt fancy their chances of emerging with all three points on Boxing Day.

This comes with Blackburn fresh off an altogether more positive result in their own latest league outing.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men made the trip to Carrow Road last weekend with concern spreading in the camp, owing to back-to-back defeats dealing the club’s automatic promotion bid a hefty blow.

Come the full-time whistle in East Anglia, though, Rovers had bounced back, and in some style.

This came as Ben Gibson’s early own goal was added to late on by Tyrhys Dolan, en route to a 2-0 victory over fellow promotion candidates Norwich.

This result also ensured that Blackburn’s remarkable run of 23 fixtures without a single draw to open the term continued, with the club’s record now standing at 13 wins and 10 defeats.

Though such a stretch being brought to an end at the Stadium of Light on Monday does look a real possibility, we at 101 are therefore backing the visitors to ultimately emerge on the right side of the scoreline, to take all three points back to Lancashire.
