Match preview

Two sides fresh off altogether contrasting weekend results are set to lock horns in a Championship clash at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, March 15th.

The matchup in question will see Sunderland act as hosts, in a meeting with Sheffield United.

Beginning with the former, Sunderland are fresh off an altogether timely bounce-back result last time out.

Fresh off a trio of successive defeats, the Black Cats made the trip to Carrow Road, for a showdown with a Norwich City side in flying form.

Tony Mowbray’s troops, as a result, halted their alarming skid down the Championship table.

They now sit in 12th, aware that a 2nd win on the spin later this evening could see them close the gap to the promotion playoff spots to just three points.

Standing in the way of Sunderland and as much, however, will be a Sheffield United outfit nothing short of desperate for a victory of their own.

At one point not long ago, United, of course, looked a near-lock for promotion.

This came with the Blades sitting 2nd behind table-topping Burnley, comfortably clear of the rest of the chasing pack.

Owing to both a dip in form, and the remarkable resurgence being enjoyed by Middlesbrough, however, Paul Heckingbottom’s have found themselves coming under increasing pressure.

In fact, fresh off four defeats in their last six – including at home to Luton Town at the weekend – Sheffield United now sit just three points clear of Michael Carrick and co.

A disappointing 1-1 stalemate with Stoke City on Tuesday night, though, means that the Blades now have the chance to put some distance between themselves and Boro once more.

And yet, we at 101 nevertheless find it altogether difficult to throw our full backing behind the faltering visitors ahead of Wednesday’s showdown at the Stadium of Light.

Instead, we are backing the spoils, come the full-time whistle, to be shared between Sunderland and Sheffield United.
