Watford have had a slightly disappointing run of results by their standards with just one win in their last five games. The Hornets suffered a 2-0 loss away at Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night and really struggled to get a foothold in the game with the home side running out comfortable winners in the end.
Rob Edward’s side will need much improvement if they are to get their season back on track against Sunderland this weekend. The fact they are at home bodes well as they tend to perform better at Vicarage Road. For a side that is widely tipped to be in the automatic places, the draws need to be converted into wins with four stalemates already this season. Bookies have them down as heavy favourites for this clash though, with the home win priced at 1/1.
Opponents Sunderland had a great result midweek, comprehensively seeing off Reading 3-0 thanks to a brace from Patrick Roberts and a goal of the season contender from Jack Clarke, who calmly finished off a team move which started with the goalkeeper rolling the ball out. Tony Mowbray will e delighted with the response given how poor the Black Cats were last time out against local rivals Middlesbrough.
However, the win came at the cost of losing Ellis Simms, who is the only recognised senior striker in the squad after Ross Stewart’s injury. It remains to be seen how long the Everton loanee will be out for, but it leaves Sunderland well short up front and despite showing how they can cope without a striker on Wednesday, they won’t want to rely on playing Pritchard as a false nine. The Mackems go into this one as 13/5 outsiders for the win.
