Wigan are in a good run of form going into this weekend’s home fixture against Reading, with 3 wins from their last five games. The Latics seem to be faring much better than the last time they were in the second tier, which ended with relegation to League One back in 2019/20. Leam Richardson is looking to shake off the ‘yoyo club’ reputation they have gained over the last few seasons and has made a decent start.
Last time out the Latics recorded a 2-1 win over struggling Luton Town with goals from Will Keane and Callum Lang, two players who have stepped up to the mark this year following strong seasons in the third tier. Wigan are strong favourites going into this one with bookies giving them odds of 1/1 to come away with another win.
Opponents Reading had a dismal time at home to Sunderland on Wednesday night, being completely outplayed by a Black Cats team who were strikerless for over half the game. Paul Ince called his side out after the game in an emotive interview, stating they were not good enough defensively. He will be after a much-improved performance here and will need his side to be better in possession.
The Royals seem to be a side that lets the opposition have far too much of the ball, averaging just 40% possession in games this season. While that does work to good effect, evidenced by their wind over Blackburn and Stoke, they have been on the end of thrashings from Sunderland, Rotherham and Sheffield United. It’s very much Jekyll and Hyde stuff from Ince’s side this year. They go into this one as 13/5 outsiders to get a victory at the DW Stadium.
