England will take on their old enemies Germany at Wembley this Monday night with the Three Lions now relegated into League B of the Nations League just 14 months after narrowing losing the Euro 2020 final.
En route to that pursuit of a first trophy since 1966, England defeated Germany 2-0 in front of a Wembley crowd. Now more than a year later since Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane sealed the deal in the round of 16 of Euro 2020, Gareth Southgate’s men are in absolute tatters. After the 1-0 loss to Italy, they are on their worst run of games in eight years, and with no goal in the past 430 minutes, it is the worst run of goalscoring form for 22 years.
England have no lost to Hungary twice and once to Italy, with the last game against Germany ending in a 1-1 draw in Munich, as Harry Kane’s late penalty cancelled out Jonas Hofmann’s strike just after the second half had begun. Germany had 63% of the ball that day with the Three Lions and the four-time world champions both seeing six shots on target each.
Like England, Germany’s place in the knockout rounds faded a while back and with the recent 1-0 loss to Hungary, they can only finish in second and therefore remain in League A Group 3 but avoid the knockout stages. Hansi Flick’s side did manage to hammer Italy in the game prior to the Hungary defeat, with back-to-back 1-1 draws just prior to that.
