Match preview

Benfica’s season just keeps on getting better and better.

Last weekend, as Águias opened up a six-point gap at the top of the Primeira Liga, hammering Chaves 5-0.

Then, on Wednesday, Roger Schmidt’s team enjoyed a quite remarkable night in the Champions League.

At kick off, PSG and Benfica were level on points and level on head-to-head, but les Parisiens’ goal difference was superior by +4.

With Paris Saint-Germain winning 2-1 against Juventus, Benfica had to fine by five clear goals in Haifa.

Going into the 88th minute, Benfica only led 4-1; Gonçalo Ramos, Petar Musa, Álex Grimaldo and Rafa Silva on target.

Benfica and PSG ended up with the same points, head-to-head, goal difference and goals scored, so the Portuguese side took first place, by virtue of away goals scored (the seventh tie-breaker).

Overall, Schmidt’s team have now played 22 matches this season and are still yet to lose.

Will that still be the case after this one?

Estoril Praia meantime kick off in eighth place, following a 1-1 draw with Portimonense last Sunday, in which they had two men sent off.

Led by Nélson Veríssimo, who was Benfica’s interim manager last season, the Canaries are enjoying mid-table serenity.

Will Estádio António Coimbra da Mota witness the run-away league-leaders first defeat of the season?
