Match preview

Shamrock Rovers have qualified for a first UEFA group stage in 11 years, but in which competition will it be?

So far this season, the Hoops have beaten by Hibernians and Shkupi, ousted in Champions League qualifying by Ludogorets in-between.

Last week, having already won 3-1 in Dublin, Stephen Bradley’s side then enjoyed an impressive 2-1 victory in Skopje.

This result means Rovers are guaranteed to compete in a group phase for the first time since 2011 because, even if they lose this tie, they’ll drop into the Europa Conference League.

This is a major achievement for an Irish club, with the League of Ireland ranked 40th, out of 55, by UEFA.

So, with very little to lose, can Shamrock Rovers spring a surprise in Budapest?

The Green Eagles have qualified for a group stage in each of the last three season, twice in this competition, whilst ending the 25-year Champions League exile in 2020.

Stanislav Cherchesov’s team swatted aside Tobol and ŠK Slovan Bratislava in Champions League qualifying, only to be ousted by Qarabağ.

Following a credible 1-1 draw in Bakı, they then suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to the Azerbaijani champions last Tuesday.

So, the four-in-a-row champions of Hungary are under enormous pressure not to fail in this tie too.

Will Ferencváros claim a, potentially, unassailable lead at Groupama Aréna?
