Match preview

These two played out a thrilling first leg at BayArena, so what will they now serve up in the Principality?

A week ago, Monaco took the lead in bizarre circumstances; goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký dilly-dallied in possession so was tackled by Breel Embolo, virtually on his own goal-line, with the ball trickling in.

However, Bayer Leverkusen came out for the second half like a house on fire, turning the game on its head, with both Moussa Diaby and then Florian Wirtz both scoring sumptuous strikes.

But then, a gorgeous left-footed strike from Krépin Diatta made it 2-2 before, in the 94th minute, Axel Disasi let fly from all of 35 yards, thereby spectacularly snatching a famous win for Monaco.

Back at home, can Philippe Clement’s team make this advantage count?

Les Monégasques have been in superb form in recent weeks, unbeaten in nine Ligue 1 games, winning seven of them, thereby climbing up to third.

Despite defeat in that first leg, Bayer Leverkusen will still believe they can turn this tie around.

Xabi Alonso’s side have won six of their last nine in the Bundesliga, although die Werkself have won just one of their last eight European away fixtures, this coming at Celtic Park.

So, Monaco are favourites to prevail at Stade Louis II.

Monaco team news

Wissam Ben Yedder and Breel Embolo almost never play together, with one rotated in for the other, with Embolo likely to start here.

Aleksandr Golovin’s goal in Sunday’s win at Brest should also see him keep his place.

Bayer Leverkusen team news

Midfielder Charles Aránguiz is out with a long-term injury, while Moussa Diaby suffered a potentially season-ending injury in the first leg.

In better news, Patrik Schick came off the bench to score against Mainz at the weekend, his first Bundesliga minutes since October.

At full-back, Daley Sinkgraven is likely to start over Mitchel Bakker while, on the other side, Jeremie Frimpong will return in place of Odilon Kossounou.
