Olympiacos would very much have been targeting a Champions League return, but now face a fight just to secure the consolation prize.
In the previous round, the Greek champions were on the wrong end of a massive upset, demolished by Maccabi Haifa.
The first leg in Israel ended all square before, last Tuesday, the visitors stunned Piraeus, leaving 4-0 winners.
In total, Olympiacos have qualified for 20 Champions League group stages, since their first in 1997, but have failed to get there in four of the last seven seasons.
To get there, they’ll need to win two ties with ŠK Slovan Bratislava providing the first hurdle.
The Slovakian champions began Champions League qualifying by beating Dinamo Batumi, but were then demolished by Ferencváros.
The Sky Blues actually won 2-1 in Budapest, but were then hammered 4-1 back at Tehelné pole.
Slovan Bratislava futures in the Europa League group phase in 2019 as well as the Europa Conference League last season.
Now, Vladimír Weiss’ side still have work to do if they’re to repeat either of those.
