After suffering a humbling defeat in Eindhoven in mid-week, can Greece get their campaign back on track?
On Thursday night, Gus Poyet’s team were demolished 3-0 by Netherlands at Philips Stadion, with all the goals coming in the first half an hour, thereby suffering their biggest defeat since June 2019.
The Sky Blue and Whites did begin this campaign with back-to-back wins, demolishing Gibraltar 3-0 at Estádio Algarve, before a 2-1 victory over Republic of Ireland that was more emphatic than this would suggest.
However, Greece have since suffered successive defeats, beaten 1-0 in Paris and then, as mentioned, 3-0 away to the Dutch.
It was always going to be a big ask for the Greeks to finish above either France or Holland, although the group’s two juggernauts both still have to visit Athens later in the year.
Even if they’re unable to claim a top two finish, which’ll obviously be tough, Greece are guaranteed a play-off place, courtesy of their Nations League performance.
Gibraltar meantime have been very consistent in Group B, but not in a good way, losing all four matches 3-0, most-recently swatted aside by Ireland in Dublin during the summer.
In fact, Julio César Ribas’ side have now lost all 42 qualifiers they’ve ever faced, conceding 189 goals and scoring just 12.
In summary, expect Greece to run riot at Agia Sophia Stadium.

Konstantinos Mavropanos sat out Thursday’s defeat in Eindhoven suspended, having been sent off at Stade de France in June, but will return at centre-back for this one.
In attack, Vangelis Pavlidis got the nod to lead the line against the Netherlands, but Giorgos Giakoumakis could come in for this one.

18 year old midfielder Nicholas Pozo, currently with Cádiz, is Gibraltar’s bright young star, while Tjay De Barr of Wycombe Wanderers could lead the line.
