It’s a carbon copy of the Euro 2020 final where England and Italy will clash one more time before the World Cup in November as the Three Lions come in search of first win in the Nations League as Italy have just the one victory on record too.
England have had a terrible campaign since reaching the final of Euro 2020. So far, they have lost two games and drawn the other two and pressure has consequently mounted on the shoulders of Gareth Southgate. Stunningly, it was Hungary who managed to inflict both of these losses as it was expected that they would finish bottom of this group. However, Hungary beat them 4-0 at Molineux last time out, not long after losing 1-0 to them in Budapest.
A 1-1 draw with Germany has also come in for the Three Lions, with a 0-0 draw in this game last time out. As for Italy, however, it hasn’t exactly gone that much smoother for them either since the Euro 2020 final victory at Wembley.
In fact, with a loss to Argentina coming in the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions game at Wembley and a 1-0 loss in Rome to North Macedonia, the European champions head into this one knowing there will be no World Cup and having lost a cup final.
Form is likely to go out the window when these two reignite their rivalry, however. The likes of Harry Kane have been in sensational form at club level, and we could even see newbies in the England squad like Ivan Toney get some action for the Three Lions. Either way, a win is a must for Southgate’s men to avoid a potential relegation into League B of the Nations League.
