Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury Preview
After two years of hype, a few fights each and a decision to fight in Saudi Arabia, Jake Paul and Tommy Fury will finally lock horns in the squared circle on Sunday night.
As has been the case in the two previous times these two have been arranged to fight one another, Paul is the betting favourite.
Those who haven’t been following the journey of these two men may agree with the odds, given the American’s stunning rise to fame in the sport. However, it’s Fury who heads into this bout as the boxer with a longer professional career and the pick to win this fight for us.
How Does Fury Win the Fight?
Although Fury has grown up in a fighting family and under the guidance of Tyson Fury and his dad John, he cannot say too much about his professional boxing career so far. Indeed, he is a pro, but in his eight fights so far, Fury’s opponents have collected a combined record of 176 losses and only 24 wins.
On one hand, his debut professional fight against Jevgenijs Andrejevs took up the bulk of these losses, as he had been defeated in 102 fights by that point. On the other hand, his opponents have gotten considerably better ever since, with Jordan Grant, Anthony Taylor and Daniel Bocianski having a combined record of 12 wins and just two losses.
To beat Paul, Fury has to simply forget about all these opponents, as the famed YouTuber is far better than each of them. The 23-year-old also has to be wary of not getting too far ahead of himself, as he clearly fancies his chances to win this fight and go on to compete for world titles in the future.
We expect Fury to outbox Paul for a while and use his incredible 80-inch reach to keep him outside of his own jab. As the fight goes on, the Love Island star should get the job done in rounds 1-4 after gradual wear and tear on Paul’s gas tank and boxing know-how.
How Does Paul Win the Fight?
In reality, we still don’t know how good Paul is. Beating Anderson Silva in a boxing match and knocking him down in the fight is incredibly impressive after only three years of fighting. At the same time, Silva is a former MMA star and headed into the bout at 46 years old. Ultimately, this is set to be Paul’s biggest test just as much as it will be Fury’s.
It’s doubtful we will see the American outbox his opponent. Fury’s incredible reach advantage and overall boxing superiority will favour him more as the fight goes on, so Paul will likely need to knock him out.
In fact, if it wasn’t for the knockdown against Silva towards the end of the fight, there would have been an argument for the Brazilian winning that battle on the judges’ scorecards. Should Paul take a similar route against Fury, it’s doubtful he’ll win again.
Despite experts picking apart the 26-year-old’s boxing ability, one thing is for certain: he has natural ability and great power in his striking. With this said, should he land cleanly on Fury, the fight could change in that moment.
We do think the Englishman gets the win and quite comfortably so. However, if Fury is not careful of Paul’s powerful overhand right, things could change in an instant for the betting underdog.
The ringwalks are scheduled to get underway at 10pm GMT on Sunday, 26 February.
