Match preview

After crashing out of Europe in mid-week, it’s full stream ahead in La Liga as Barcelona seek to regain the title.

On Thursday night, Barça faced Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Europa League, having only drawn 2-2 when the sides met at Camp Nou.

It was all going to plan for the Catalan giants, Robert Lewandowski converting an early penalty, but Man United scored twice in the second half to sneak through.

This is the first time since 1985 that Barcelona have failed to reach the last 16 of a UEFA competition, with Xavi’s team now solely focussed on domestic matters.

Back at home, things are going very well for Barça, who start the weekend eight points clear of Real Madrid.

Goals from Sergi Roberto and Lewandowski downed Cádiz last Sunday night, making it seven wins on the spin.

Almería meanwhile are not in good form, steamrollered 6-2 by Girona at Montilivi in their last outing nine days ago.

Rubi’s team were 4-0 down by half time of that Friday night fixture, making Largie Ramazani and El Bilal Touré’s second half strikes of little consequence.

Los Rojiblancos have now lost three successive fixtures in La Liga, sinking from 11th to 17th during this period.

Thus, Almería start the weekend just above the relegation zone but, if Cádiz win/draw or Valencia win on Saturday, they’ll kick off in the bottom three.

In short, both teams need the points at Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos.
