Match preview

It’s the first Derbi barceloní of the season, with FC Barcelona currently top of the La Liga table, but will they remain there and claim a first title for four seasons?

Before the break, Xavi’s team enjoyed five successive La Liga victories, immediately proceeded by their first defeat of the season, coming in el Clásico.

In their last outing 53 days ago, despite having Robert Lewandowski sent off, Barça came from a goal down to beat Osasuna at El Sadar; Pedri and Raphinha scoring.

So, this meant on Christmas Day Barcelona sat proudly in first place, two points clear of Real Madrid, needing a win to remain there.

City-rivals Espanyol haven’t won at Camp Nou since 2009, but would love nothing more than to cause a huge shock on New Years’ Eve.

This seems unlikely though with Diego Martinez’s team 16th, having won just twice so far.

Since then though, Espanyol have come through two Copa del Rey ties, overcoming Rincón and Atlético Paso, so could be sharper than their more glamour neighbours.

Will Barcelona be too strong at Camp Nou?
