Match preview

Elche’s season just goes from bad to worse.

On Tuesday night, los Franjiverdes were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Cueta, the side rock bottom of the Primera Federación Group 1, part of Spain’s third-tier.

More importantly, Elche are themselves at the foot of La Liga, having accumulated a mere four points after 15 games, failing to win any of them.

Last time out, Pablo Machín’s team were beaten 2-0 by Atlético Madrid, so are now nine points from safety.

The fewest points any team has ever accumulated in a La Liga season is Sporting de Gijón, who cobbled together just 13 in 1997/98.

Even though less than 40% of this season has been played, Elche are well on course to smash that unwanted record.

Carlos Carvalhal’s team drew 1-1 with Sevilla in their last league outing; Gabri Veiga breaking the deadlock at Balaídos.

Like their hosts, O Celtiña were then beaten in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday, ousted 3-1 by Espanyol in an all-La Liga clash.

Back in the league, will it be more misery for Elche at Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero?
