Will Atlético Madrid’s excellent form continue?

Last weekend was a night of celebration for Diego Simeone, taking charge of Atleti for the 613th time, becoming the club’s longest-serving boss, surpassing the late Luis Aragonés.

Los Colchoneros certainly celebrated the occasion in style, smashing Sevilla 6-1 at Cívitas Metropolitano, their biggest La Liga win for nine years.

Memphis and Álvaro Morata both bagged braces, with Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco also on target.

Atlético are now unbeaten in eight and have surged up to third place, possibly hunting down Real Madrid, given that the gap is only eight points.

Girona meanwhile are always a good watch; they’ve averaged 3.2 goals per game this season, with both teams scoring in 18 of 24 fixtures.

Valentín Castellanos and Miguel Gutiérrez both scored at the Coliseum, but Blanquivermells could not find an equaliser.

Before this, the Catalan side had won three out of four, beating Valencia, Almería and Athletic Club.

This leaves the newly-promoted club 11th, and they’d be delighted to remain there.

Will Atleti leave Estadi Montilivi with three points?
