Match preview

The former Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham manager, surprisingly, had never taken charge of a team in La Liga until ten days ago.

The 48 year old, who won one senior cap for Spain, made a positive start to life in el Graná’s dugout.

His team held Atlético Madrid to a goalless draw at the Wanda Metropolitano, in a game that lacked noteworthy incidents.

However, that point wasn’t enough to drag them out the relegation zone as they remain 18th, one point below Cádiz and two adrift Mallorca.

It’s been a tough season for Granada, epitomised by the fact they’ve changed manager twice; both Robert Moreno and Rubén Torrecilla have come and gone this year.

Nevertheless, with five games to go, they’re still very much in with a fighting chance of staying up, and a victory here would see them leap above the dotted line.

Celta de Vigo meanwhile only survived on the final day in 2020, before kicking on and finishing eighth last time round.

Thus, expectations were sky-high for Eduardo Coudet, with even talk of European qualification, but they haven’t lived up to those lofty ambitions.

Last time out, O Celtiña’s poor form continued, losing 2-0 to Getafe and Balaídos, meaning they’ve only won two of their last ten.

This has seen Celta drift down the table to their current position of 12th, with very little to play for.

Thus, they should be perfect opponents for Granada who will be targeting three huge points at Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes.

Granada team news

Aitor Karanka deployed a very pragmatic 4-5-1 in his first game but, facing Atlético away and then Celta at home are completely different ball games.

So, Jorge Molina, who wasn’t even on the bench in Madrid, will return up front, if fit, alongside Luis Suárez, with Carlos Bacca also an option.

Midfielder Njegoš Petrović had become a key figure under previous manager Rubén Torrecilla so will be hoping that doesn’t change.

Celta Vigo team news

Iago Aspas

In an attempt to combat the fact his side have little to play for, Eduardo Coudet has been deploying very attacking line-ups.

This hasn’t really had the desired effect with Celta only scoring thrice in their six matches since a 4-3 win over Mallorca in early-March.

Nevertheless, Iago Aspas, Santi Mina, Brais Méndez, Franco Cervi and Denis Suárez will continue as the attacking front five.
