Match preview

Two of La Liga’s over-achievers go head-to-head in this Monday night clash in Madrid.

Rayo Vallecano have only ever qualified for Europe once in their entire history, reaching the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 2001.

Given that los Franjirrojos begin the weekend in seventh place, their supporters are dreaming of a return to continental competition.

Last Monday night, Andoni Iraola’s team enjoyed another eye-catching win, beating Villarreal 1-0, thanks to Sergio Camello’s second half goal at Estadio de la Cerámica.

Los Vallecanos have now won five of their last 11, losing just two, although they have been beaten in both of their last two home fixtures.

So, Rayo will be determined to claim all three points in front of their own supporters this time.

The Segunda División champions start the weekend in 11th place, on track for their highest top-flight finish for 14 years.

Rubi’s team were also victorious in their last outing, ten days ago now, beating Espanyol 3-1.

Luis Suárez, Léo Baptistão and Francisco Portillo all on target in a Friday night fixture at Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos.

That was Almería’s first victory since November, although they’ve only lost to teams in the top six since September.

However, on the road, los Rojiblancos are still yet to win this season, their only draws coming at Cádiz and Valencia.

So, Rayo Vallecano are favourites to take the points at Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas.
