RCD Mallorca had lost seven consecutive games before a surprise 1-0 victory over Atlético Madrid ten days ago.

As a result of this heavy defeat at Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero, Mallorca remain just one place and one point above the drop zone.

Deportivo Alavés, in contrast, reignited their fading survival hopes at the weekend by beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0.

Top-scorer Joselu, who else, with the only goal, coming in the second half, at Mendizorrotza.

This was Julio Velázquez’s third game in charge, losing the first two, but the victory means Alavés could yet pull off a great escape.

El Glorioso do actually remain bottom of the table but are now just four points below Mallorca and safety.
