Match preview

Two of the world’s biggest football clubs will lock horns for the 249th time in the most eagerly anticipated game in club football: El Clásico.

These two have already met twice this season with Real Madrid winning both meetings, first a 2-1 success at Camp Nou in October.

Then, in January, los Blancos won 3-2 in Riyāḍh after extra time in the Supercopa de España semi-final en route to that particular trophy.

This is illustrative of the gulf that exists between the two, as is the fact Real Madrid are currently 15 points above their great rivals.

On Monday night, the deadly duo of Vinícius Júnior and Karim Benzema were on target again in a 3-0 victory over Mallorca at Son Moix.

This result means Carlo Ancelotti’s men have won four successive league games and are ten points clear of second-placed Sevilla.

The Supercopa is already secured and a second La Liga title in three seasons looks set to follow.

This means the Champions League will be los Blancos’ focus, particularly after they drew holders Chelsea in Friday’s quarter-final draw.

But, before then, it’s all about beating their biggest and fiercest rivals.

Barcelona meanwhile looked set for a catastrophic season not so long ago, but have got it together and come into this one in fine form.

Last Sunday, Xavi’s side hammered Osasuna 4-0 with Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and forgotten man Riqui Puig all on target.

So, Barça are now unbeaten in 12 league games, winning four in a row, so have climbed up to third, their highest positition of the campaign.

Since then, the Blaugrana have remained on track to win the UEFA Europa League for the very first time.

Having only drawn 0-0 at home, they had to beat Galatasaray in İstanbul to advance but did so with Pedri and Aubameyang scoring in a 2-1 victory.

Barça will now face Eintracht Frankfurt in the last eight of that competition.

The Catalan giants have shown clear signs of improvement under Xavi but a Clásico victory, away from home, would be his biggest achievement since arriving as Head Coach.

Who will win the biggest match on the club football calendar at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu?

Real Madrid team news

For almost the entire season, ten of Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI never changes with only the right-wing positition up for grabs.

However, Real Madrid suffered some injury concerns in the Balearic Islands on Monday night.

Ferland Mendy, top-scorer Karim Benzema and Rodrygo all hobbled off in that one

Mendy is defiantly out so, as was the case when he was suspended against PSG, Nacho will fill-in at left-back with David Alaba alongside Éder Militão.

In attack, there is optimism Benzema will be fit but Rodrygo isn’t going to make it.

So, Marco Asensio and Vinícius Júnior will be hoping to flank Benzema who’s scored 32 goals already this season.

Luka Modrić was given a rare rest on Monday but will return alongside Casemiro and Toni Kroos in midfield.

Barcelona team news

Barça have had three days less rest than their hosts which could count against them.

Right-back Sergiño Dest went off injured against Galatasaray, so Dani Alves will return, thereby facing Real Madrid for the 47th time.

In defence, Eric García has been starting recently but Clément Lenglet will surely come in here alongside Gerard Piqué.

Sergio Busquets will anchor midfield in his 43rd Clásico with Frenkie de Jong and Pedri likely to continue alongside.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang once admitted he dreamed of playing for Real Madrid.

This’ll be his seventh appearance against them, scoring five in his last four, including a brace when he last visited the Bernabéu in 2017.

Ferran Torres and Adama Traoré completed the attack on Thursday but Ousmane Dembélé, Nico or Memphis are all alternatives.
