Match preview

Can Real Sociedad make sure they qualify for European competition for a third successive season, last achieving this in 1981?

La Real were top of La Liga in early-November but, as games came thick and fast, their squad was stretched to the limits and this has taken it’s tole.

Last time out, los Txuri-Urdin drew 0-0 with Sevilla, which was no surprise given that both draw lots of games and neither are free-scoring.

In fact, at the start of the weekend, only Getafe, Cádiz, Mallorca and Alavés have scored less than Real Sociedad’s measly tally of 29.

Despite their lack of potency, Imanol Alguacil’s side have only lost two of their last 11 games but, having only won five, are down in sixth.

Astonishing, they’ve scored just 11 goals at home so far this season, looking to add to that tally in this Monday night clash.

RCD Espanyol meanwhile are currently 12th and on course for a respectable finish, given that they were in the Segunda División last season.

Vicente Moreno’s side are in decent form right now, amassing seven points from their last three outings, beating Mallorca 1-o in their last game.

As a result, Blanquiazules are enjoying their longest unbeaten run since October, so will that continue at Anoeta?

La Real have struggled for goals all season, an issue that’ll only be made worse by Mikel Oyarzabal’s long-term injury.

Alexander Sørloth got the nod against Sevilla but Alexander Isak could lead the line here, flanked by Portu and Adnan Januzaj.

David Silva could also return to midfield, looking to solve their attacking problems.

At left-back, Nacho Monreal is still out but his deputy Diego Rico is fit again.

Espanyol team news

Raúl de Tomás will continue to be Espanyol’s main goal-getter having netted for the 14th time this season against Mallorca.

In that one, veteran goalkeeper Diego López went off injured at half time so, if he’s not back, Oier Olazábal will deputise.
