Match preview

Following an emphatic Basque derby victory on Saturday night, will Real Sociedad keep their Copa del Rey hopes alive?

At the weekend, la Real beat fierce rivals Athletic Club 3-1 at Reale Arena.

Alexander Sørloth breaking the deadlock with an emphatic strike, before Takefusa Kubo doubled their lead and Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted a spot-kick.

So, having won four La Liga games on the spin, Imanol Alguacil’s team have climbed up to third in the table.

Meanwhile, los Txuri-Urdin have also won three Copa del Rey ties, overcoming Cazalegas, Coria and Logroñés.

So now, will the 2020 Copa winners safely book their place in the quarter-finals?

In this year’s competition, los Bermellones have ousted Autol, Real Unión and then Pontevedra, needing extra time in the latter.

Meantime, in La Liga, Javier Aguirre’s team were beaten 1-0 by Osasuna on Saturday, the only goal coming just after half time.

So, Mallorca have now lost two of their last three, despite being undefeated in four beforehand.

All of this leaves the side from the Balearic Islands tenth, a vast improvement on last season when they survived on the final day.

In this tie though, Real Sociedad are big favourites to advance at Anoeta.
