Match preview

Bolton Wanderers will play hosts to Derby County this Boxing Day at the University of Bolton Stadium with the two sides right by one another in the League One table and comfortably sitting in the playoff positions too.

As of now, it is Bolton who have slight bragging rights as they sit in fifth and one place above the sixth-placed Derby. Just one point is the difference, and they also have a game in hand over seventh-placed Wycombe Wanderers too, which does mean a bit of breathing space. Bolton have won 10 games compared to Derby’s nine, although they have scored two fewer goals and let in two more as well.

Bolton are in fine form right now after a tricky start to December saw them draw 1-1 with Bristol Rovers and then lose 3-2 to Shrewsbury Town. What’s more, they defeated Manchester United U21s 4-0 in the EFL Trophy third round two weeks back to set up a quarter-finals tie with Portsmouth. The Greater Manchester outfit also beat Exeter City 2-0 over the past weekend in League One.

Sixth-placed Derby smashed Forest Green Rovers at the same time in a 4-0 demolition, thanks to a goal from Nat Mendez-Laing and another hat-trick of the season for David McGoldrick.

Paul Warne’s men are also coming into this game with one less loss than Bolton, although they have drawn two more with seven on the board.
