Match preview

Despite the fact MK Dons finished six points above Wycombe Wanderers in the table, it’s the Chairboys who are on the cusp of reaching the final.

These two Buckinghamshire rivals met in the first leg at a sold out Adams Park on Thursday night, and it was a great night for the home fans in attendance.

Then, mid-way through the second period, Milton Keynes’ hopes of a comeback suffered a big blow.

Josh McEachran’s reckless, late tackle on Josh Scowen saw him shown a yellow card, his second of the night, meaning MK were down to ten-men.

Wycombe took full advantage when, with just eight minutes to play, Garath McCleary’s cross was expertly headed home by Sam Vokes.

Thus, the Chairboys will make the short 32 mile journey north with a 2-0 lead, one that move prove insurmountable.

2020/21 saw Wycombe compete in England’s second-tier for the first time ever, suffering relegation on the final day.

This season, having snuck into these play-offs on the final day, Gareth Ainsworth’s men are targeting an immediate return to the Championship.

In contrast, Milton Keynes Dons came agonisingly close to automatic promotion, finishing one point behind second-placed Rotherham.

MK only lost two of their last 19 league matches, but now their hopes of returning to the Championship for the first time since 2016 hang by a thread.

Liam Manning is going to need a big turnaround from his players or, as has been the case in all four of MK’s previous play-off campaigns, it’ll end in heartbreak.

MK Dons team news

Scott Twine has scored 20 goals for MK Dons this season, including four in the final day victory over Plymouth.

Josh McEachran’s red card on Thursday means he is suspended, adding extra responsibility to Conor Coventry, on loan from West Ham.

Dean Lewington will make his 885th appearance for the club at the back; he made his debut in 2003 when the club were still Wimbledon.

Wycombe Wanderers team news

Adebayo Akinfenwa is retiring after this play-off campaign so will be desperate to go out on a high.

He came on for the final seven minutes on Thursday and will be on the bench again with midweek scorer Sam Vokes leading the line.

Captain Joe Jacobson scored the winner in the 2020 play-off final and will be desperate to be returning to a rather more boisterous Wembley in 13 days time.
