It’s arguably the biggest game of the season for Colchester United and Gillingham this weekend with the two bottom teams in League Two set to clash at Preistfield this Boxing Day as only goals difference keeps them apart ahead of the game.
Both clubs are on 14 points right now, but with Gillingham’s dreadful goalscoring record of just six goals scored, they are down in 24th and sitting at the foot of the table with little hope of getting out of the relegation zone – this goals scored record is the worst in League Two history at this stage in a season.
Gillingham can be confident in getting above Colchester in some regard, however, due to their extra game to play. They have also lost just 10 games compared to Colchester’s 13. Nevertheless, the away side head into this game having scored three times more goals.
The U’s have not won a game in December so far, losing to both Mansfield Town and Sutton United by a goal. They had the week off last week because of the postponement of the fixture against Salford City. Colchester did beat Doncaster Rovers 3-0 before this run, which was easily their best result of the season.
Gillingham lost 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup in midweek, but in beating Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Cup at the start of the month, they do have an FA Cup clash with Leicester City to look forward too.
