Match preview

Two sides looking to push themselves away from the relegation spots meet on Saturday in League Two as Hartlepool United play hosts to Newport County at the Suit Direct Stadium with just four places in the table the difference between them.

Despite just four places keeping them apart, there is a bit of difference in their seasons so far. Ahead of the game, Hartlepool may finally be off the bottom of the table but they are still the worst defensive side in the league with an alarming 39 goals let in. At the same time, the club have also won just three games – only Gillingham in last place have won fewer.

Hartlepool have also lost 12 times so far and scored just 18 goals from 21 games. On the other hand, by beating Harrogate Town in the FA Cup second round, they have set up a third round clash with Championship side, Stoke City. The club also returned to the win column last time out by beating Crawley Town away from home – this was their first win on the road this season.

As for Newport, they are above the bottom four by seven points so far, but they do also have to deal with the fact that 21st-placed Rochdale have a game in hand. The South Wales outfit have won double the games Hartlepool have (6), while they also sit with a commendable 20 goals and only 24 let in. Their main concern has been the defeats so far, losing 11 games from the 21 played in League Two.
