It’s a huge game for both Mansfield Town and Grimsby Town this weekend with the Mariners down in 14th after a topsy-turvy season so far with Nigel Clough’s men up into fifth after a decent run of form.
The main concern for Mansfield heading into this game is the fact they have played a game extra than most sides around them with 21 outings compared to 20. They have, however, won the fourth-most games in the division with 10 victories and seven losses. Mansfield have also managed to score 29 times and let in 27 goals, which does mean they have the worst defensive record in the top half of the table right now.
Clough’s side have put together a decent run of form in December so far. They managed to draw 0-0 away to second-placed Stevenage last time out, but in beating Colchester United at home just a week prior, they have a bit of breathing space in the playoff spots.
As for Grimsby, they bounced back into the win column with all three points against Tranmere Rovers. The club did lose to Wimbeldon just before this result, but Paul Hurst’s men also edged past League One’s Cambridge United away from home at the end of November to set up a third round FA Cup clash with Burton Albion.
It feels like crunch time now for Grimsby, as their inconsistencies keep them in the bottom half of the table.
