Fifth-placed Mansfield Town will welcome third-placed Northampton Town to Field Mill this Boxing Day in arguably the most important clash in League Two this gameweek with eight points still separating the two despite being so close in the table.
For quite some time now, League Two has rapidly become a two-horse race for second as Leyton Orient continue to run away with the league title in first. Northampton are still coming into this one with a gap of nine points to make up on Leyton Orient, but they are only two points behind Stevenage.
The Cobblers have not lost a game since a defeat to Salford City back at the start of October and they have since gone on to beat Stevenage in second 3-2 away from home and draw 0-0 with the league leaders.
Northampton defeated Carlisle United 2-1 last time out, and with them also managing to beat Bradford City away from home in the past month, they remain one of the most in-form sides in League Two.
As for Mansfield, they are still in 10th after drawing 0-0 with Stevenage last time out. The club’s match with Grimsby Town was postponed last weekend, although this does mean that Nigel Clough’s men are heading into this one unbeaten in December, having also beaten Colchester United at Field Mill.
It’s set to be one of the biggest games of the season for both sides. For Mansfield, it’s their best chance yet to stamp down their marker on the top five.
