Stockport County will welcome Gillingham to Edgeley Park this weekend with the Hatters looking to get into the top half of the table as they sit 13th in the table in what has been a topsy-turvy return for them in the Football League.
It’s the first League Two campaign in over a decade for County and it hasn’t quite gone to plan. They were the favourites to win the league before the season started, but after 20 games they are two points behind the top half of the table and have let in 22 goals already.
The Greater Manchester club can still be pleased with the fact they have scored 29 goals so far, which is only two fewer than that of Stevenage in second. On the other hand, with eight games won and eight games lost, County’s inconsistencies are clear for everyone to see.
County are in stunning form right now, however. They drew 2-2 with Charlton Athletic away from home in the FA Cup second round, but last week, they managed to beat the League One club 3-1 at Edgeley Park in the replay. Things were made even more impressive in this run with a 5-0 demolition over Hartlepool United.
As for Gillingham, they remain bottom of the table with a terrible record of six goals scored. No side in Football League history has netted fewer goals after 20 games than them, and with two wins on the board, they are now five points adrift of Harrogate Town in 20th.
