Two sides eyeing up a spot in the playoffs this season will meet one another this weekend with Walsall set to play hosts to Mansfield at the Banks’s Stadium after contrasting results last time out.
Mansfield enhanced their playoff chances greatly over the recent festive period, as the club remain in sixth after a narrow win over the in-form Hartlepool United. Rhys Oates scored once more for his side before Oliver Hawkins scored the winning goal as the Stags came from behind to win the game.
The club also drew with Northampton Town and Stevenage in the past three weeks, and it leaves Mansfield on 38 points from 23 games and with just a five-point gap on third-placed Northampton.
Walsall moved from eighth to 13th with a loss to Stockport County on Thursday where two Kyle Wootton goals pushed Michael Flynn’s side to now five points behind Mansfield.
The club do still sit with a game in hand on many sides above them and despite their playoff hopes taking a hit, the league position of 13th doesn’t quite tell the whole story.
