Lille’s abysmal display at home to Paris Saint-Germain will be looming large over them when the 2020/21 Ligue 1 champions travel to Estadio François-Coty where the winless Ajaccio awaits them this Friday night.

From literally seconds in, Lille were dominated by the French champions with a second half goal from Jonathan Bamba being the only positive to take away from the game for the home side, as Kylian Mbappe netted after eight seconds. Quite incredibly, however, Lille did manage to record 10 shots on target that game from 16 efforts towards goal, which was more than what PSG managed, despite scoring seven times in contrast to Lille’s one.

Former Roma manager, Paulo Fonseca, is now at the helm and he is already under great pressure from fans after patience all but ran out last season with a dismal 10th-placed finish in the club’s efforts to defend the Ligue 1 title. A draw to Nantes where Ismaily scored a late equaliser came two weeks ago, and the past two results have now overshadowed what was a fantastic victory on the opening weekend of action.

Lille played hosts to the newly-promoted Auxerre that day, where Benjamin Andre scored after a few seconds, before the elite marksman and last season’s top scorer, Jonathan David, netted twice in the first half. Akin Zedadka added a fourth just before Auxurre pulled one back with 22 minutes left on the clock.

Ajaccio are lacking the firepower up top so far, as they have scored just twice in their three games, losing two of the fixtures and drawing the other. What’s worse, even when they got a point against Lens two weeks ago, the game still finished 0-0 with only two shots on target for last season’s Ligue 2 runners-up.

Lille’s 4-1 win over the third-placed Ligue 2 side, Auxerre, is a good indication that Lille will swiftly return to winning ways when facing another newly-promoted side here and Fonseca cannot afford to lose again after the 7-1 mauling from PSG last weekend.
