Match preview
Marseille will be attempting to keep up their unbeaten run in Ligue 1 when they head to the Raymond Kopa Stadium on Friday night as they meet with an Angers side with one of the worst defensive records in Europe right now.
It’s been a struggle for Angers this season and they are only above the drop zone because of one extra win over the likes of Nantes and Reims. That other win came in a very professional display against Nice away from home, as Nabil Bentaleb scored the game’s only goal for his side. Sofiane Boufal was sent off in that fixture for Angers, however, and he will now not be available for this match.
What’s more, Angers did defeat Montpellier 2-1 last time out as well, which now means they are on a two-game winning run after Boufal netted from the penalty spot just after a goal from Adrien Hunou.
As for Marseille, they remain unbeaten in France’s top flight with six games won and two drawn, which does also put them just two points behind the league leaders, Paris Saint-Germain. The club have scored 16 times and let in four so far, but after a 1-1 draw with Rennes and a 1-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, Marseille only have a win over Lille to boast about in September after also losing to Tottenham Hotspur in Europe.
Prior to this topsy-turvy run, however, the club did register three consecutive wins where they also had a clean sheet in each of them. Only time will tell if Marseille are genuine title contenders or not, and in beating an in-form Angers away from home, they may just set down their biggest marker yet.
