10th and seventh will meet in Ligue 1 this Wednesday as Lille and Clermont Foot battle at the Gabriel Montpied Stadium after a winless December for Clermont Foot from three games during the World Cup.
Clermont met with Valencia at the start of December in a friendly, as the club went 3-0 down at one stage in the game. A clash with Valladolid came soon after, before then losing 1-0 to Sochaux just last week. Now, against Lille, they have a chance to jump further up the Ligue 1 table with them already sitting in the top half.
It has been a great season for Pascal Gastien’s men, with them now just two points behind eighth-placed Lyon, but they do sit seven points behind Lille in sixth. Should Gastien’s side win here, it would probably be their best statement in the league so far this season.
Lille have 26 points up in seventh and they had a fantastic time of things during the World Cup break. They avoided defeat in every game they played, and by playing out five games during the World Cup, they were one of the busiest teams on the continent.
Stunningly, Lille beat Napoli 4-1, after beating Valladolid 2-0 and Cambuur 2-0. They also defeated Club Brugge 1-0 and drew 2-2 with Oostende, which was the only time they didn’t win a game from the five in December.
