Will this finally be the season that Olympique de Marseille’s trophy draught comes to an end?

In their illustrious history, les Phocéens have lifted 26 major trophies, including nine Ligue 1 titles and the Champions League in 1993.

However, OM’s most-recent success came back in 2012, beating Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue Final.

Amazingly, Marseille haven’t won this competition since 1989, losing in the 2006, 2007 and 2016 final.

Right now, Igor Tudor’s team are third in Ligue 1, following Monday night’s 2-1 victory over Montpellier.

Nuno Tavares scored and then was sent off in the victory at Stade de la Mosson.

As for Hyères FC, given that they ply their trade in Championnat National 2, the fourth-tier, this’ll be a huge occasion for them.

Having overcome Alberes Argelès and Saint Estève Perpignan, both in penalty shootouts, they’ve reached the last 64 for just the second time.

There’s been plenty of controversy surrounding this tie before the players have even taken to the field.

Hyères’ home Stade Perruc doesn’t meet requirements so, under FFF rules, the tie should be reversed and played at Stade Vélodrome.

However, the federation have decided this tie will take place at Stade Françis Turcan, home of Martigues, 41 kms outside Marseille.

Neither club are pleased with this but, wherever this tie is being staged, Marseille should cruise through.
