Match preview

Lens head into the final game before the World Cup with a chance to make it 11 wins from 15 games in Ligue 1 this season as they aim to keep the pressure on the league leaders, Paris Saint-Germain, with the visit of Clermont Foot to the Estadio Bollaert-Delelis.

The second-placed Lens have been terrific all season long, and despite many predicting their demise shortly into the season, they remain just five points adrift of the champions PSG in first and are already five points clear of Rennes in third. In truth, the longer time goes on, the more this is becoming a two-horse race in France.

Lens will, however, be quite unsatisfied with the upcoming break for the World Cup. Pauses in the season as such are always an issue for teams in such a purple patch, and given how they were not predicted to be this high in the table at this stage, when action returns in December, things could be very different.

Nevertheless, they’ve already won 10 games, have an equally impressive record as PSG on the defensive front with just nine goals let in, and have lost only one game in the league.

Clermont are holding on tight to 10th right now in the table, and should they end up here at the end of the week, it will have to be marked down as a very impressive first 15 games of the season for a side many tipped to get relegated.
