A huge game at the Stade Pierre Mauroy on Friday night kicks off the Ligue 1 action for the weekend with Lille set to welcome Lyon to their own patch with four places in the table keeping the two apart after very contrasting seasons.
Lyon’s struggles from last years have spilled into this campaign, and they now come into this one after dropping two points once again in a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Lorient at the Groupama Stadium.
It keeps the Ligue 1 giants all the way down in 10th with nine losses on the board and just 11 wins from 26 games. Worse yet, they side behind Lille in sixth by six points and Monaco in third by 12 points.
At the very least, Laurent Blanc has guided Lyon to a semi-final position in the French Cup, as Bradley Barcola and Jeffinho scored a goal each in a narrow 1-0 win over Ligue 2′s Grenoble Foot – they will now meet with Nantes in April.
As for Lille, their incredible winning run has come to an end in recent weeks with a loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the capital and a draw with Lens last weekend to keep them outside of the European spots.
They are, however, only behind Rennes in fifth by one point and Lens and Monaco by six points.
