Match Preview

Clermont Foot have swiftly moved on from 5-0 embarrassment at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on the opening day with the club now going on a two-game winning run ahead of travelling to Lorient in the midst of their solid start to the season.

Both of these clubs were in a long and tiresome relegation battle throughout all of last season, as they both spent time in the relegation zone for large parts of the campaign. In the end, the two finished directly above the bottom three with Lorient ending up in 16th, ahead of Clermont Foot in 17th by only goals difference.

Lorient have only played two games so far this Ligue 1 season with the game against Lyon getting postponed which is now rescheduled for some time later this year. The club first defeated Rennes in a sensational defensive display away from home against last campaign’s second-highest scorers.

A 2-2 draw with Toulouse saw the club come behind with 10 minutes to go thanks to a penalty from Ibrahima Kone after initially leading the game with a goal from Armand Lauriente. Their defensive excellence significantly weakened in this outing.

Clermont Foot smashed Reims 4-2 away from home after the 5-0 loss to PSG on the opening weekend, and with them defeating Nice 1-0 thanks to a finish from Saif-Eddine Khaoui, they sit in fifth after three games.

Both sides look completely different to the struggles shown in 2021/22 and it makes for a promising game in Ligue 1 this weekend where goals may come in after 17 have been seen in their combined five fixtures so far. On the other hand, the fixture is that important, that Clermont and Lorient may struggle to be separated.
