Eighth and ninth in Ligue 1 will battle at the Groupama Stadium this Friday night to kick off the final round of fixtures in France’s top flight before the World Cup break with neither side able to mathematically jump into the European spots before then.
It’s been another terrible season for Lyon after the dismal attempts of last campaign. In fact, after finishing eighth last season, they sit in the same position right now having lost the same amount of games (6) as they have won. What’s more, Lyon have scored 22 goals and let in only 17 – this is the best goals difference record for those outside of the top six.
It did look as if Lyon would be able to kick on from their woes shown throughout October and September recently, as they managed to defeat Montpellier and Lille towards the end of last month. However, after a loss to Marseille in a recent derby, the club have once again moved back to losing ways.
As for Nice, they are down in ninth after a positive run of form seen them become one of the few teams to beat Lorient in a 2-1 win, before a 1-0 victory over Brest last time out. Combine this with their run in the Europa Conference League that seen top their group, and Lucien Favre’s men are in much better form right now. In fact, Nice have not lose in Ligue 1 since the start of October to champions Paris Saint-Germain.
